2018 GRA Policy Conference

Mark your Calendar for the GRA Conference in Detroit in 2018

The Citizens Research Council of Michigan invites you to the Governmental Research Association’s 104th Conference and Annual Meeting in Detroit, MI, from July 29 – August 1, 2018.

Sessions will be held at the Grand Valley State University Detroit Center.  Attendees are suggested to make hotel reservations at the Aloft Detroit, a 100+ year old office building that was recently converted into a hotel and apartments.  Room rates are $199/night for single and double bed rooms.  Information for making reservations will be shared as we get closer to the conference.

Aloft Detroit is a very short walk from the GVSU Detroit Center, Comerica Park (it is reported that the Tigers will be in town at this time), and a number of restaurants.  It is adjacent to the People Mover to offer access throughout Downtown Detroit and provides access to the QLine for easy access to Detroit’s culture center (the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Michigan Science Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Detroit Historical Museum).

Detroit is an interesting place to visit and learn about.  Lonely Planet recently named Detroit the number 2 destination city on the Earth and the New York Times included the city among the 52 Places to go in 2017.  This acclaim speaks volumes about the revival of downtown and midtown, just four short years after the city became the largest U.S. city to declare bankruptcy.

What gets less media attention is the story of two Detroits.  How the neighborhoods continue to struggle with blight, abandonment, and decay.  How the school system, with test scores among the lowest in the nation, struggles to attract families.
